It’s no secret that OpenAI has been working on a search engine for the web. ChatGPT can now search the web. You will be able to get answers with links to relevant web sources. You can click on the search button to get started. The search feature is available at ChatGPT.com as well as through desktop and mobile apps.

We tested the feature already, and it does seem to do a good job finding relevant results. You can now ask questions in a more natural way. As the company explains, it has partnered with various news and data providers. Citations will be available, so you can get more information as you need. Here is what the search model is all about:
The search model is a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o, post-trained using novel synthetic data generation techniques, including distilling outputs from OpenAI o1-preview. ChatGPT search leverages third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners.
How this affects Google, other engines, and web publishers, that remains to be seen. ChatGPT chooses to search the web based on what you ask automatically but you can also manually ask it to do so.
